Sickle Cell Disease: What Every Nigerian Family Should Know
Nigeria has more babies born with sickle cell disease than any other country. Knowing your genotype, getting good care and understanding the warning signs can save lives.
🩸 What is sickle cell disease?
Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood condition. Healthy red blood cells are round and flexible, but in sickle cell disease they can become stiff and curved like a sickle. These cells can block blood vessels, causing pain and damage to organs, and they break down faster, causing anaemia.
🧬 Genotypes explained
🟢
AA
Normal haemoglobin. Cannot pass on the sickle gene.
No trait
🟡
AS
Carries the sickle cell trait. Usually healthy but can pass the S gene to children.
Carrier
🔴
SS (or SC)
Has sickle cell disease and needs ongoing medical care.
Couples who are both AS can still choose to marry. Speak to a doctor or genetic counsellor about the risks and options before planning a family.
🚨 Warning signs that need urgent care
⚠️
Act fast
Go to a hospital immediately for: high fever, severe pain that home care doesn’t ease, difficulty breathing or chest pain, sudden weakness, slurred speech or a drooping face, a painful long-lasting erection, or a child who is very pale, sleepy or has a swollen belly.
Children with sickle cell disease can go to school, play and grow into healthy adults with good care. Support, not stigma, makes a big difference.

Frequently asked questions
Can two AS people marry?
Yes, but each pregnancy has a 1 in 4 chance of a child with SS. Couples should talk to a doctor or genetic counsellor to understand the risks and options.
Is sickle cell disease contagious?
No. It is inherited from parents through genes and cannot be caught from another person.
How do I know my genotype?
A simple blood test at a hospital or reliable laboratory will tell you your genotype.
