How to Use PayPal in Nigeria (2026): Receive Money with Paga and Withdraw to Naira

For 20 years Nigerians could only send money with PayPal, not receive it. In January 2026 that changed: PayPal now works in Nigeria through Paga, so freelancers, creators and small businesses can receive PayPal payments and move them into naira.

🆕 What changed

PayPal blocked Nigerians from receiving payments in 2004 because of fraud fears. A 2014 deal with First Bank allowed sending only, and a 2021 deal with Flutterwave was mostly for businesses. In January 2026 PayPal partnered with Nigerian fintech Paga as part of its “PayPal World” plan: you link your PayPal account to your Paga wallet, receive money into PayPal, then move it to naira.

✅ What you can do now

  • Receive payments from clients and family in 200+ countries — and from Venmo users in the US.
  • See your PayPal balance inside the Paga app.
  • Convert to naira and withdraw to your Paga wallet, then to any Nigerian bank.
  • Pay online at shops that accept PayPal, as before.

🔗 How to set it up

  1. Open a Paga accountDownload the Paga app from the Play Store or App Store and verify yourself with your BVN/NIN. Upgrade your account so you can hold larger amounts.
  2. Create or open your PayPal accountUse your real name — exactly as on your BVN and bank account — and verify your email and phone.
  3. Link PayPal in the Paga appLook for the PayPal option in the Paga app and follow the steps to connect your PayPal account.
  4. Share your PayPal email with whoever pays youClients pay you on PayPal as normal.
  5. WithdrawIn Paga, convert your PayPal balance to naira and send it to your bank account.
💡
Check the rate

The exchange rate and any fees are shown before you confirm a withdrawal. Compare with other options (Payoneer, Grey, Wise, direct bank transfer) for large amounts.

💼 For businesses

Business owners can connect a PayPal business profile to Paga and settle sales locally in naira. Paga says letting Nigerian merchants accept PayPal at checkout on its payment gateway is the next phase.

⚠️
Avoid these traps

Never buy or “rent” a foreign PayPal account, and never use a VPN or fake address to open one. PayPal can freeze the account and keep the money. Also beware of “PayPal funding” agents on social media — many are scams.
