Nigerian food critic and social commentator Opeyemi Famakin has criticised the use of tribalism in public discussions, arguing that the dangers posed by fake drugs affect Nigerians regardless of their ethnic background.
In a statement directed at the Igbo people, Famakin claimed that Kano ranks second among locations associated with the production of fake drugs in Nigeria. He also alluded to another ethnic group being associated with the number one position, using the claim to question what he described as the tendency to engage in tribalism and what he called “Igbophobia”.
Famakin expressed concern that ethnic divisions could distract Nigerians from addressing issues that threaten public health and safety.
“Dear Igbo people let’s talk. The Number 2 hub of making fake drugs in Nigeria is Kano. We know the tribe that are in Number 1. Are you guys not tired of using tribalism and Igbophobia? All of us are dying of fake drugs. What are you guys doing?” he said.
His remarks centred on the need for Nigerians to look beyond ethnic differences and pay greater attention to the dangers of counterfeit medicines.
