Professional boxer Edgar Berlanga has been arrested on domestic violence charges after allegedly striking the mother of his child with a handgun during an argument in Florida.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the incident occurred on October 18 while Berlanga was driving with the woman in Polk County.
Police allege that the argument became physical when Berlanga began slapping her before taking out a pistol and striking her in the head. The woman reportedly tried to leave the vehicle, but Berlanga allegedly grabbed her arm to prevent her from getting out. She eventually broke free and ran to a nearby 7-Eleven, where bystanders called police.
Responding officers said they observed swelling and bruising on her forehead that appeared consistent with her account. When an officer asked whether the firearm was real, the woman said it was, explaining that they had visited a gun range approximately 20 minutes before the incident.
According to the report, she did not want to pursue charges. Police nevertheless proceeded with an arrest because the allegations involved domestic violence. Berlanga was booked into the Pasco County jail on two domestic violence-related offences: felony aggravated battery and misdemeanour battery involving touching or striking.
Records cited by TMZ show that he made his first court appearance on Tuesday, when his bond was set at $16,000. The allegations have not been determined by a court. The report did not include a response from Berlanga or his representatives. Berlanga holds a professional boxing record of 24 wins and two defeats, with 19 knockout victories.
In September 2024, he lost by unanimous decision to Canelo Alvarez in a contest for the WBA, WBC and WBO super-middleweight titles. He is currently signed to Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing. In July, he headlined an event at Madison Square Garden, defeating Steven Butler by knockout in the seventh round.
