How to Study in Cyprus, North Cyprus, Turkey and Italy from Nigeria (2026)

Not everyone can afford the UK, US or Canada. Cyprus, North Cyprus, Turkey and Italy have become popular with Nigerian students because tuition is lower and admission is simpler. Each has its own process — and its own things to watch out for.

🇮🇹 Italy

  1. Choose a course and apply to the universityMany universities have English-taught degrees. Deadlines are often between January and May for September intake.
  2. Pre-enrol on UniversitalyEvery non-EU student must pre-enrol on the Universitaly portal. Your visa can’t be processed while it says “under condition”.
  3. Apply for the type D study visaBook at the Italian embassy or its visa centre. For 2026/27 embassies ask for proof of about €10,180 for the year, accommodation, €30,000 health insurance and your academic documents with a Declaration of Value or equivalent.
  4. Apply for DSU and university scholarshipsRegional DSU grants (based on family income) can cover tuition, a meal plan and some living costs.
  5. Get your residence permitWithin 8 working days of arriving, apply for the student permesso di soggiorno at the post office.

🇹🇷 Turkey

  • Apply directly to the university (many accept WAEC/NECO and A-levels; some need an entrance exam or SAT).
  • Türkiye Bursları scholarship: applications usually open January–February, covering tuition, monthly stipend, housing, flight and a year of Turkish.
  • With your acceptance letter, apply for a student visa at the Turkish embassy in Abuja: passport, photos, proof of funds, accommodation and insurance.
  • Within the first month after arrival, apply for a student residence permit.

🇨🇾 Cyprus (Republic of Cyprus — EU)

  • Get an offer from a university in the Republic (south) — e.g. in Nicosia, Limassol or Larnaca.
  • The university applies for your student entry permit with the Civil Registry and Migration Department; you need proof of funds, medical tests and police clearance.
  • Nigerians need a visa to enter; get it from the Cyprus embassy that covers Nigeria after the permit is approved.
  • Students can usually work limited hours in certain sectors.

⚠️ North Cyprus (TRNC)

North Cyprus is recognised as a country only by Turkey, so there are no embassies in Nigeria. You fly to Ercan airport through Istanbul with your passport and the university’s acceptance letter, then get a student residence permit after arrival (with a health check). Admission is easy and fees are low, but:

  • Check the university is accredited by YÖK (Turkey) and YÖDAK (TRNC), and that your degree will be accepted for jobs, NYSC or further studies.
  • A North Cyprus residence permit does not let you enter the Republic of Cyprus or the EU.
  • Part-time work is limited — don’t go expecting to pay your fees by working.
  • Use the university’s own international office, not unknown agents, and talk to current Nigerian students first.
⚠️
Protect yourself

Never pay an agent who promises “guaranteed visa” or “work and study with free fees”. Pay deposits directly to the university’s official account and get a receipt. See our fake visa agents guide.
