From your passport and yellow card to money, medication and copies of your documents — use this checklist in the weeks before you travel out of Nigeria so nothing stops you at the airport.

📁 Documents
- International passport valid for at least 6 months after your return date, with blank pages. See our passport guide.
- Visa (if needed) — check the dates and number of entries.
- Yellow fever card — Nigeria uses the e-Yellow Card; many countries and airlines check it.
- Return or onward ticket, hotel booking or invitation letter.
- Travel insurance documents.
- Admission letter, CAS or job contract (students and workers).
- Printed and digital copies of everything (email them to yourself).
💳 Money
- Tell your bank you’re travelling and confirm your naira card works abroad (and the dollar limit).
- Get a dollar/pound card or a domiciliary account card for spending.
- Carry some cash in the local currency for your first day (taxi, SIM card, food).
- Declare cash above US$10,000 (or equivalent) to Nigeria Customs when leaving or arriving — undeclared cash can be seized.
🩺 Health
- Vaccinations required for your destination (yellow fever for many).
- Enough prescription medicine for the whole trip, in original packs, with a doctor’s letter.
- Some medicines legal in Nigeria (strong painkillers like tramadol or codeine) are banned or controlled elsewhere — check before packing.
- A small first-aid kit, malaria prevention if travelling to another malaria area.
🧳 Packing
- Check your airline’s baggage allowance and weight limits.
- No foodstuff that is banned at your destination — many countries ban meat, fish, seeds and some spices. Declare food when in doubt.
- Weather-appropriate clothes (it can be cold in Europe even in spring).
- Plug adapter (UK uses 3-pin like Nigeria; Europe uses 2-pin).
- Never carry a parcel for someone else.
